Microsoft Windows Explorer, is a GUI (Graphic User Interface) for drag and drop or copy and paste files and folders from one storage media to other storage media. Just select the source folder and then paste at the other new destination. But one think that  I don't like using Windows Explorer especially when I want to copy a big size or source to new destination folders, because when the process running and in the middle of it there are one or more files can not be open maybe because of security issue or bad sector, then the hole process will be stop and have to start from the beginning.

This is a problem for me, because let's say I would like to copy big folders with more than 10G data size to new harddisk, I need about 30 minutes. When Windows Explorer running about 25 minutes (it mean only 5 minutes time left) then it find something wrong with files, than the hole process will be stop, sometimes I did not event get any files copied.

How to solve this copy problem?

Thank's for other Microsoft Windows utility call XCOPY.EXE. This is a command prompt base program, so we need to call and execute the option directly from the command prompt (dos prompt). Maybe for some people this is to complicated to do this, but when you spare about 3 minutes to read the help of XCOPY than doing the copy is very easy, and we can give the options to continue copy although one or more files can not read properly.

At the command prompt, start to call XCOPY

for help, type:
c:>xcopy /?

Usually XCOPY already available to call from command prompt. If we can not run XCOPY from command prompt, maybe the path is not correct. We have to assign a path when we run MS Dos Prompt (Command Prompt) by typing:

c:>path %path%;c:windowssystem32

%path% use for retype the path which is already assign before, and then we just adding the other new path as what we want, the underline above is new path which need to run XCOPY from command prompt.


Sample of using XCOPY

In this sample case, we want to copy all data at drive D:data to new location E:ackup

d:>xcopy d:data*.* e:ackup /s /e /c

option information:
/s use for copy all files in directories and subdirectories
/e copy all directories and subdirectories although the empty one. This is together use with /s
/c use for continue copy even it found an error, the process will be continue.
