What is WiFi ? WiFi is the abbreviation of "Wireless Fidelity". At this time, there are so many places that already use WiFi as a medium for public wireless Internet access, either free or paid. We can find it at cafe or restaurant also public locations such as recreational park for families.
Now, almost all new notebook computer have been equipped with WiFi as standard features. Other gadgets also equipped with WiFi such as mobile phones, PDAs and others. Therefore the use of WiFi become more popular for gadget users especially for data communications. The WiFi already grow from time to time, now WiFi already covers the various IEEE 802.11 technologies, this is also include 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, and 802.11n. The standard freq for WiFi which is permitted to use by public without any license is 2.4 GHz.
Traditional way to connect 2 or more computers for local area network, we have to use cable to connect each other. This way will be more difficult if the computers which want to connect separate by floor space and partition. However, this situation now can be easily solve by using WiFi to connect all computers. But one of the obstacles that still has not replaced by the wireless cable is, the available bandwidth on the wireless is still not as big as a bandwidth which available on cable connection. I think this is fair, but WiFi can be cost saving because we don't have to use cable, also it will be seen more cleanly, without using cables cross each room and floor.
Microsoft Windows XP already have features to connect the computer using WiFi without have to install additional software, but maybe we still have to install the driver for each WiFi equipment/modul. To connect between many computer to a network, we need a access point, this is also known as hotspot. Let's say for an area which have a public internet access, the internet connection from ISP have to share with a hotspot/access point, usually it can serve many computer together, but more computer connect make the bandwidth to share become small.
The access point can be share open free without any encryption, or with encryption. For encryption, it can be use WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy), but some information told that this encryption can be decrypt. Then in year 2003, the new encryption way announce, known as WPA and WPA2 (Wi-Fi Protected Access). Some location use open free for their WiFi access point, so any gadget can easy to connect without do/set anything at gadgets, but this is not save, because the unencrypted WiFi network data can be monitored by unauthorized user to read and copy the data which transmitted though the network, so this is not secure especially if we want to login for any personal information such as email or internet banking.
